Remote Instruction Plan & Other Important Information

Benton-Carroll-Salem School District has implemented a Remote Instruction Plan beginning Monday, March 16, 2020 to continue as high quality teaching and learning as possible.  This Remote Instruction plan will continue through at least Friday, April 3, 2020.  Spring Break remains a break, so there will be no services or teaching during the week of March 23.  Flexibility is key during this period.  Be calm. Be well. Be kind.

Update for B-C-S Students and Families on March 24, 2020

As we move through this challenging time together, I want to keep you in the loop on some important issues.

Mental Health and Well Being

These are challenging times for adults, and more so for young people.  If you think your child can benefit from talking to a counselor, please do not hesitate to call your child's school on March 30 or after.  I also want to remind you of the Crisis Text Line:

Text HOME to 741741 from anywhere in the United States, anytime, about any type of crisis.

One suggestion for our overall mental health is for us to all get outside and walk, or do some kind of physical activity (while practicing social distancing).  Something as simple as a walk can do wonders for the mood and help with anxiety.

Does the "Stay at Home" Order Change Anything with Teaching/Learning?

For students and families--no.  When we are back from Spring Break on Monday, March 30, our buildings will again be staffed with essential personnel.  Teachers will again be available to students/parents for assistance, including help with technology issues.  The Stay at Home Order indicates that K-12 education is an "essential" operation.  We have essential staff in place to facilitate this.  Meal distribution and delivery will continue daily starting March 30 (see below).

Any new news about school closure?

As of this moment--no.  The Ohio Department of Health has closed schools in Ohio through April 3, 2020.  Governor DeWine has signaled that schools may be closed beyond this, but there has been no announcement yet.  I will let you know when we know more.  There is also "talk" about cancelling state testing this school year, but nothing is certain yet.

Big Thanks!

I want to extend a huge Rocket thank you to several community groups who came together to serve free meals to our B-C-S students during Spring Break: Magruder Hospital, Connie Cornett and the Ottawa County Family Advocacy Center, Ottawa County TNT Mentoring, Oak Harbor Summer Lunch Club, and Callie Willoughby of Shoreline Church in Oak Harbor.  These meals were originally going to be served Monday--Thursday, but it was decided that to distribute all of the food on Monday.  Thank you again to these community-minded folks!

Regular B-C-S Meal Service Continues Week of March 30

Benton-Carroll-Salem Schools will continue its free meal service for students during the week of March 30.  All students can get both breakfast and lunch Monday--Friday at no charge. Parents or caregivers may pick-up meals without their child present, but will need to provide the students name and address for verification. The drive through service for all students (including Penta students) will take place at R.C. Waters Elementary School between the hours of 9:00 AM and 12:00 Noon, Monday through Friday. Meals being picked up do not need to be ordered ahead. If you are unable to pick up your child's meal, you may request delivery to your home by calling 419-898-6219.  If you need a delivery please call between 8--10 AM.  Again, the breakfast and lunch meals will be free for all B-C-S students.

What is happening with Commencement for the Class of 2020?

Commencement is a seminal moment in the lives of young people!  We may have to postpone the OHHS Commencement (May 17) due to an Ohio Department of Health Order limiting the number of people who can get together.  We are considering options and alternatives if we are forced to postpone Commencement.  We believe our Class of 2020 deserves recognition!  Stay tuned.

Does the work of students completed remotely count?

Yes!  The teaching and learning taking place remotely (online and paper based) will count.  Since we are teaching and learning we consider these “in-session” school days.

Please continue to check your emails and the front page of the district website, www.bcssd.com, for the latest news and information from Benton-Carroll-Salem School District.

Be Calm.  Be Well.  Be Kind.
